Stylistically, this story was an homage to Elmore Leonard. Darryl, Carl, Sally (to a lesser extent) and the plot would feel right at home in a Leonard story. But while Leonard has a tendency to make his protaganists more clever than the dumbass criminals they come up against, I deliberately gave Billy a case of the stupid.
Also, this story was written around Halloween, which would explain the borderline supernatural slant to it. Maggie is a stand-in for a witch, albeit a very subtle, unconventional witch.
