This was written during a period of frustration at my last newspaper job. While I did incorporate some actual experiences (the BB gun story Mark mentions, for instance, happened to me), this is not a roman-a-clef and Mark is not meant to be my stand-in. Had I been confronted with a parent like Esther Wilson, I'm honestly not sure how I would have handled it.
